Moving back the vote

Primary runoff: extension is the right thing to do

Alabama will have to put up with three more weeks of campaign ads and commercials during what is usually a quieter time during a campaign year.

Some politicians will have a few more anxious nights, with voters having a little longer of a time to choose between candidates who made the runoff in either the Republican and Democratic parties following the June 6 primary.

The runoff, scheduled for June 27, is being pushed back to July 18 to give military serving overseas adequate time to cast absentee ballots. The move by the state legislature to move back the primary date will put an end to a lawsuit by the Justice Department, which felt the usual three week break between the voting was not enough time for military personnel to receive and cast absentee ballots.

The new date was chosen after Republican Attorney General Troy King and Democratic Secretary of State Nancy Worley recommended a three-week delay.

While extending the campaign season may seem to be an annoyance to voters who will be tired of corny and sometimes nasty attack ads, it is worth it. It is not a move that will cost the taxpayers any more money.

Our soldiers have spent the last three years in Iraq trying to help democracy gain a foothold. They should be able to participate in the democracy back home.

  • Avert a new health crisis

In the Cullman city or county school systems, if a student is determined to have head lice, they will not be allowed to return to school until a health care provider determines the student in question is clear of head lice.

The reason is simple, if not obvious. It is in the best interest of those in the school system to contain an outbreak.

  • Give all a raise

Cullman’s police officers make a good point when they say they’re underpaid.

We agree. Working on a police force is a difficult, stressful and potentially dangerous job, and we believe police officers need to be reasonably compensated for the risks they take and the vital role they serve in protecting Cullman’s citizens.

But they aren’t the only ones who tackle a tough-but-rewarding job with low pay. Teachers fall into the same category. So do social workers and journalists (we have to throw ourselves into the mix, don’t we?)
