Missed opportunity

No debates: Candidates won't get together

Former Chief Justice Roy Moore claims he's ready to debate. Gov. Riley said he's willing, but his campaign spokesmen said he is already booked.

Former Gov. Don Siegelman requested a debate as early as January, but Lt. Gov, Lucy Baxley wants to hold off until Siegelman's trial is complete. That probably will not happen until after the June 6 primary elections.

While we're sure there are legitimate reasons why debates among the major candidates for governor have not been held, we're disappointed there will not be an opportunity for the voters to get an in-depth look at the difference between the candidates in each race, to see where they stand on the issues beyond the sound bytes they hear on television. It would be nice for voters to get an opportunity to see them on the same stage.
