Purple Heart memorial service

CULLMAN — The Finis J. Self Chapter 2212 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart will hold their annual memorial service at 10 a.m. Aug. 4, at the Purple Heart Monument in Sparkman Park in Hartselle. This service honors all fallen warriors of Cullman and Morgan counties, who were killed in action or received a Purple Heart for injuries received during their duty while in the service (PH recipients may still be living).

The Purple Heart recipients’ names inscribed on the wall are read aloud accompanied by the sound of the bell during this solemn and reverent service. Then the veterans’ walk is held, open to all who have served in our armed services, both during wartime and peacetime. Engraved bricks on this walk honor or memorialize the military veterans of these two counties.

The guest speaker this year will be Brigadier General Joe Stringham, U.S. Army-retired. State representatives Ed Henry and Mac Buttram, Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long, and Hartselle Mayor Dwight Tankersley will read the names.

JROTC cadets from Priceville High School will post the colors. Father Patrick Egan, Cullman County, will give opening prayer. Former POW George Mills will conduct the POW/MIA ceremony. SFC Donna Johnson and Enell Baker will sing patriotic songs. The Patriot Guard Riders, flags flying, will make their grand arrival and be present during the ceremony.

This service is open to the public. For those wishing to have a loved one’s name (a Purple Heart recipient) inscribed on the monument, or to purchase a brick for a military veteran to honor or memorialize, may contact Clifford Gissell at 256-734-9637 or cib.cmb@att.net.
