Health Fair expo held at Sacred Heart Church

CULLMAN — Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church sponsored a Health Fair in conjunction with St. Vincent’s Health System of Birmingham recently in the Family Life Center. Seventy evaluations were conducted with nearly 100 people visiting the various educational tables set up during the three-hour event.

The free medical screenings which were conducted by St. Vincent’s Health System employees included bone density and BMI (Body Mass Index) tests as well as blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol readings.

Following the completion of the five tests, individuals were counseled about their health results and ways they could address any health issues which were discovered. They received paperwork with test results to carry to their physicians at their next visit.

Numerous tables were manned with officials who offered printed information concerning health and nutritional education as well as professional weight loss and mental health awareness programs. First Source for Women was represented as were the American Heart Association, WIC, TOPS and the Cullman Office of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

During the morning’s event, children were treated to games and activities and awarded jump ropes to promote their physical activity endeavors. Healthy snacks and drinks were available for everyone with the ROCK group youths of the Church helping during the three-hour session.

Following studies of the outcomes of the tests performed, plans are to follow up with educational programs pertaining to the areas of health issues which are determined to be most in need of attention.

Diane Harwood and Sondra Nassetta of Sacred Heart of Jesus coordinated the special event with the assistance of Dominique McCall, Hispanic Outreach Manager from St. Vincent’s Health System in Birmingham. St. Vincent volunteers who manned the various testing sites included Yuri Zatarain, Cesar Santiago-Ortiz, Isaac Sanchez and Perla Hernandes.
