CULLMAN — Each year, the Cullman VFW Post 2214 recognizes a local teacher, law enforcement officer, emergency medical technician, and firefighter for the year. Those chosen, along with family, are invited to a dinner/awards ceremony. Additionally, the veterans sponsor a Patriot's Pen patriotic essay contest for area middle school students and a Voice of Democracy patriotic essay contest for area high school students. The Veterans of Foreign Wars are proud to recognize these outstanding members of our community both for their service and for their love of country.

Cullman's senior center to close March 24
The Donald E. Green Senior Center will be closed the week of March 24-28, 2014, due to roof construction. Regular activities will resume Monday, March 31.

Brittany Kay Robinson named 2014 Wallace State Homecoming Queen
Wallace State's Brittany Kay Robinson of Sylacauga is Wallace State Community College's 2014 Homecoming Queen. She was crowned queen during halftime of the men's basketball game Monday night versus Snead State.

Local teen in Miss Birmingham/Montgomery pageant
Rebecca Carter of Vinemont was recently selected to participate in the 2014 Miss Teen Birmingham/Montgomery pageant competition that will take place Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014. Rebecca learned of her acceptance into this year's competition when the pageant announced their selections following interviewing in the local Birmingham/Montgomery area. Rebecca submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by this year's Birmingham/Montgomery Pageant Coordinator.
Congressman Aderholt appointed to U.S. House defense subcommittee
The committee sets annual appropriations levels and has federal spending oversight for the departments of Army, Navy (including Marines), Air Force and Marines, as well as the Central Intelligence Agency and Intelligence Community Staff.
