HANCEVILLE —
Throughout the month of October, visitors to the Wallace State Community College campus in Hanceville may notice silhouettes bearing information about domestic violence. These are Silent Witnesses. They have been provided by Victim Services of Cullman in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Wallace State Community recognizes both the significant achievements that have been made in reducing domestic violence in America, and the important work still to be done. According to the Domestic Violence Awareness Project, an average of three women in America die as a result of domestic violence each day. One in four women and one in thirteen men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. That domestic violence often goes unreported makes these statistics even more sobering.
In October, Wallace State joins with communities across the country in mourning those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrating the tremendous progress victim advocates have made over the years, and in connecting with one another in a true sense of unity to end domestic violence.
