CULLMAN — Miss Emily Kent Donovan, the daughter of Jackie Drake Donovan and the late Kent St. Clair Donovan, was selected as a distinguished member of the Birmingham Debutante Club for the 2012 season. Her paternal grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. John St. Clair Donovan of Mountain Brook, Alabama, and her maternal grandparents are Mrs. Van (Ann) Drake and the late Van Jackson Drake of Cullman, Alabama. The honor of being selected as a Birmingham Debutante enabled Miss Donovan to be presented both at the 52nd annual Ball of Roses, June 2, 2012, and the 83rd Heritage Ball, Nov. 23, 2012. Both events were held at the Country Club of Birmingham.

Miss Donovan was escorted and presented by her only brother, Drake St. Clair Donovan, a University of Alabama graduate. As tradition dictates, before the dance and parties, girls are presented by their fathers, or the closest male family member, in a formal presentation.

Emily is a fourth-year student at the University of Virginia (her father’s alma mater), and will graduate in May 2013 with a double major in biology and psychology. She is a member and past executive officer for her sorority, the Alpha Delta Pi chapter at the University of Virginia.

The Ball of Roses is the debutante season’s most colorful and floral ball, which is sponsored by the Ballet Guild of Birmingham. Lagniappe Designs designed a colorful palette and garden theme for the ball decor. The Men’s Committee Dinner planned a formal seated dinner for donors prior to the presentation. However, the Heritage Ball, established in 1929, is a long-established annual holiday tradition, and requires the debutante to have a direct family lineage to the original founding families of this prestigious ball. The debutantes are presented to their families, honored Club members, and the closest family friends.

Miss Donovan has also received an invitation to be presented at the 64th National Debutante Cotillion and Thanksgiving Ball of Washington for the benefit of Children’s National Medical Center in November.
