Shoals symphony at UNA opens season Oct. 14

FLORENCE — The Shoals Symphony at UNA opens its season at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14, with a concert at Norton Auditorium, on the University of North Alabama campus, featuring Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist Yakov Kasman.

Kasman will play Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” Op. 43. The symphony also will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5 in E minor,” Op. 64.

Medaling in the1997 Van Cliburn competition, Kasman has performed around the world and recorded several CDs. He is a teacher and adjudicator and most recently performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Dayton Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic, KBS Orchestra in Seoul and Orchestre Lamoureux at the Theatre de Champs Elysees in Paris as well as taught master classes in Japan.

Tickets for the concert, $15 for adults and $5 for students, are sold in advance at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, 217 E. Tuscaloosa St., Florence, 256.760.6379, and at the door.

This year marks the symphony’s 30^th anniversary season, said Viljar Puu Weimann, symphony music director and conductor as well as an instructor at UNA.

“To celebrate, we have a truly spectacular season planned,” he added. “We have commissioned a symphony and will premiere it at the Dec. 9 concert. On March 10, we have a special family concert planned that will feature Britten’s ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.’ Our season will close on May 4 with a concert extravaganza when we bring to you Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’.”

Season tickets are $50 for adults and include one ticket for each of the four performances. FlexPass tickets that include four tickets to be used in any combination are $50 for adults and $20 for ages 18 and under. In addition, those who make donations at various levels become members of the symphony’s Director’s Circle and receive benefits such as free FlexPass tickets and invitations to special concerts and events.
