Kickoff planned Jan. 16 for 2014 Relay For Life of Cullman County

Relay For Life of Cullman County

CULLMAN — Each year, more than 4 million people in 20 countries gather to raise funds and raise awareness to save lives from cancer through the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life events.

Cullman County will kick off its 2014 event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at First Baptist Church of Cullman. The event is open to the public and will be held in the fellowship hall in the church basement.

Through research, ACS-funded studies have developed treatments that have prolonged the lives of cancer patients. Research has also developed tests for early detection. ACS educates the world about cancer prevention and the importance of early detection. The ACS lobbies lawmakers to create laws that protect the public.

ACS has also provided assistance directly to patients through such programs as Road to Recovery, by which volunteers provide transportation to and from treatments for cancer patients; Look Good Feel Better, which provides makeup and skin care tips for women undergoing treatments; Reach to Recovery, which provides support from breast cancer survivors to new breast cancer patients; and Hope Lodge, which provides free housing to cancer patients and their caregiver.

The hundreds of Cullman area residents who will participate in Relay For Life of Cullman County make up a small but important part of the whole.

Anyone interested in participating or learning more about Relay For Life is encouraged to attend the kickoff. Relay For Life of Cullman County will be held May 2-3 at the Cullman County Fairgrounds. Team captains meetings for the remainder of the year will be held at noon and 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 6, March 6, April 3, and April 24 at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall.
