David Haynes says he can teach anyone interested in learning how to play the piano all the chords needed to play any style of song in any key in about three-and-a-half hours.

Haynes travels around the eastern United States teaching Instant Piano classes, and is scheduled to host a workshop Wednesday at Wallace State Community College. During the class, he said he plans to teach how to play piano by looking at guitar chord symbols instead of reading notes.

“From this class, people can go on to play by ear, and also be able to fancy up songs,” he said. “It’s a one night class where people learn a tremendous amount of knowledge on how to play by chords instead of by years of piano lessons.”

If students don’t know treble clef, which is the musical symbol used to indicate the pitch of written notes, they can send a self-addressed stamped envelope for a free pamphlet to Music Masters, 90 Molly Lane, Ringgold, Ga. 30736.

Haynes is a former music professor. When he’s not traveling to teach classes, he lives in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The class is scheduled for 6 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Wallace State. Anyone interested in registering for the class may contact 352-8166 for additional information, Haynes said.

The cost for the class is $50 per person, and $25 for a book and CD to be used for practice after the class.
