Alexander Cockburn: Will Tilikum, the 'Killer Whale', get his day in court?

Remember Tilikum? Back in 2010, I likened this proud mammal — 6 tons and 22 feet long and the largest orca whale in captivity — to Spartacus. Tilikum was kidnapped by whale-slavers off Iceland at the age of two in 1983. Deliberately starved as part of his "training" in a Sealand tank in Victoria, Canada, Tilikum has spent the past 19 years in SeaWorld, Orlando Fla. The whale has been involved in three lethal onslaughts on his captors, the most recent being an attack on Dawn Brancheau, a trainer he dragged into his tank and drowned in February of 2010.

  • Immigration issue is about the law

Recently, I have been following The Cullman Times’ articles dealing with the issues of illegal workers for agriculture and other manual labor jobs. Most recently in the Sept. 21, issue an editorial dealing with these topics has now spun the issue from the center focus to far left of center.

2011-12 ChairmanCullman Area Chamber of Commerce

I think you’ll agree that Cullman County couldn’t have been handed any more lemons than we were handed on April 27 when multiple tornadoes with winds up to 175 miles per hour ripped a path of destruction 38 miles long across Cullman County. And I think you’ll also agree that in the storm’s aftermath, Cullman County couldn’t have made a bigger pitcher of lemonade. In my role as this year’s chairman of the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, I’m extremely proud of the citizens of the City of Cullman, the City of Hanceville and Cullman County.
