DECATUR, AL — The Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA) has honored the Cullman City Parks and Recreation with the 2013 “Good Neighbor” Friend of Tourism Award. The award is among 10 that comprise the PEAK awards that were presented Sept. 19, during the AMLA annual meeting at the Huntsville Marriott in Huntsville, AL.

Representing the highest achievement in North Alabama tourism, the PEAK awards honor individuals and organizations that have had a major impact on tourism in North Alabama. The “Good Neighbor” Friend of Tourism Award is presented to a person or organization whose body of work has had a significant impact on tourism in the past year.

For 44 straight weekends in 2013, Cullman City Parks and Recreation will play host to tournaments with an anticipated economic impact of $20 to $30 million for Cullman County. Some of the large-scale events already held include one of the largest baseball tournaments in its history, where 118 teams participated with teams traveling from Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina; the successful Rock the South festival, where over 30,000 were in attendance; the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association’s State Swimming and Diving Championship, which attracted over 1,000 swimmers and nearly 5,000 visitors; and an archery competition that brought in over 1,200 archers from as far away as Australia.

“The PEAK Awards recognize the best of North Alabama’s tourism and travel industry, and this year’s nominees and winners have all done an exemplary job in delivering an exceptional visitor experience,” said Tami Reist, president/CEO of the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association. “It is important we take the time to celebrate the achievements of our local tourism leaders, attractions, festivals, and front-line workers who all work tirelessly to make North Alabama a must-visit destination.”
