CULLMAN — Freezing temperatures combined with a dusting of snow Tuesday canceled classes and closed local schools, as education officials continue to grapple with the dangerously cold conditions.

Both Cullman County schools and Cullman City schools will be closed all day today. County officials say they are most worried about road conditions in more remote areas of the county, though roadways in all areas could be dangerous due to black ice.

Officials within both systems also anticipate a two-hour delay on Thursday, though that could change.

After initially announcing a two-hour delay, the Cullman County Board of Education called off classes completely Tuesday morning. Cullman City Schools started on time Tuesday, but dismissed at 10 a.m. once snow started to fall.

Wallace State also canceled classes Tuesday and today.

“We’ve been out riding roads the last few hours, and the main roads are in fairly good shape,” county schools superintendent Billy Coleman said. “But, the side roads are in difficult shape and we believe our school buses would not be able to make many of them. We’re also announcing a delay on Thursday, though we could reassess that, but we believe those side roads will need a lot of thawing out.”
