County schools closed Friday, city to start on schedule

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Cullman County Schools have been cancelled due to lingering icy conditions in parts of the county, while Cullman City Schools are set to resume on-schedule Friday morning.

Both systems have been forced to cancel classes the past three days due to heavy snow and ice across the area.

County schools superintendent Billy Coleman said his decision to cancel was made after surveying roads in more remote areas of the county.

“We have some side roads, where the sun doesn’t hit, and I just wouldn’t feel safe putting our buses on them,” Coleman said. “There are spots all over the county, especially out across the north side. We also have some campuses with parking lots filled with snow and ice. I just don’t want to put people at risk.”

With the sun out most of the day Thursday in the city, conditions improved drastically in downtown Cullman, and city schools superintendent Dr. Doreen Griffeth noted that was a major factor in her decision to reopen. Though school is set to start on-time, Griffeth encouraged anyone driving in the morning to use caution.
