County, city out for Wed.: Snow forces further school cancellations

CULLMAN — With road conditions expected to remain hazardous for at least another day, the Cullman County Board of Education and Cullman City Schools have canceled classes for the second day in a row.

Both systems will remain closed on Wednesday, after canceling classes on Tuesday due to a winter storm that has dumped several inches of snow on the area. Cullman County schools superintendent Billy Coleman said the decision to cancel classes was made due to dangerous road conditions that could cause safety issues with the countywide school bus system.

Though the Cullman City Schools system doesn’t operate a full-fledged transportation system, officials say the potentially icy roads around downtown could still be too slick for students and parents to safely travel.

With more snow and freezing temperatures expected to persist for at least another day, Coleman noted more delays or cancellations could be possible.

“We’ll be watching all of that very closely,” Coleman said.

Cullman City Schools superintendent Dr. Doreen Griffeth noted she will also be monitoring conditions before making a decision on Thursday.

Wallace State will also be closed on Wednesday for the second day in a row.
