Cullman County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a Joppa man Thursday for allegedly raping and sodomizing a child.

According to sheriff’s reports, Bobby Glenn Riley, 42, was charged with rape in the first degree and sodomy in the first degree.

The victim was reportedly a 12-year-old female who was related to Riley.

Sheriff Tyler Roden said the investigation into the case began approximately three weeks ago.

“The abuse had occurred over last year,” Roden said. “It had happened several times.”

Roden noted all the alleged abuse occurred in Joppa.

Investigators would have arrested Riley on Tuesday, Roden said, had he not been shot the day before.

“He was shot in the head with a 22-caliber rifle,” Roden said. “He said it was an accidental shooting. But he knew that an arrest was imminent. We still suspect it was an intentional gunshot.”

A defense attorney was not listed for Riley at the Cullman County Courthouse on Friday.

Riley was incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center, but has since been released on a $20,000 bond.

Rape in the first degree and sodomy in the first degree are Class A felonies, punishable by between 10 years and life in prison.
