HANCEVILLE — The Hanceville Water and Sewer Board passed a 2009 budget and extended their contract with the managers of the city wastewater treatment plant during a special called meeting Saturday morning.

The board approved a $1,313,268 budget for the 2009 fiscal year. The budget included the $207,062 annual fee for ClearWater Solutions, the private company that has managed the wastewater treatment plant since May of last year. All board members except Kim Brown approved a three-year extension of ClearWater’s contract.

During a previous board meeting, members questioned whether enough money would be available in the budget to keep ClearWater.

“They didn’t account for the depreciation in the budget,” said General Utilities Manager Chris Freeman. “We took that out and that freed up around $400,000.”

In other business, the board upheld Freeman’s decision to suspend water department employee Sally Alexander from work without pay for four days. They also tabled a decision to surplus a $200,000 tertiary filter from the treatment plant.
