PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Addison QB Rivers out for season with injury

he ending Jordin Rivers was looking for.

The Addison High quarterback emerged as a valuable offensive weapon a year ago. So heading into this season, Rivers was supposed to be one of the Bulldogs’ leaders.

Through two games, Rivers was Addison’s leader on the field. But when the Bulldogs face rival Winston County (2-0, 1-0 Class 2A, Region 6) tonight, they will be without their field general.

Rivers’ season was cut short last week, tearing his MCL and ACL in Addison’s 6-0 loss at Falkville.

“It’s a tough loss for us,” Addison coach Randy White said. “Jordin was a reallly important part of our team.

“We’ll just have to do the best we can and move past this.”

With his starting quarterback out for the season, White’s young team just got a lot younger.

According to White, sophomore Cole Hayes will probably play quarterback this week. That means Addison (0-2, 1-0) will have three sophomores in their offensive backfield.

“We’re young back there. That’s for sure,” White said. “This is a learning experience for these young players. They have to grow up in a hurry.”

• Saints hope to have winning record: Coming off a big win on the road, St. Bernard hopes for an even bigger win at home.

There’s a good chance the Saints could have their wish come true this week when Parkway Christian (0-2, 0-1) travels to Cullman for a Class 1A, Region 6 matchup.

St. Bernard (1-1, 1-0) beat Jefferson Christian 36-34 last week, earning the program’s first win since 2006.

So if St. Bernard does improve to 2-1 on the season, just how big would it be?

“That would be huge,” Saints coach Bill Griffin said. “That would be great for our program, it would be great for our school. Our fans would love it.”

• Wounded hoofs: Apparently the injury bug has paid Steve Miller’s stable a visit.

The Holly Pond head coach has several wounded Broncos heading into tonight’s game at Crossville.

Three of the injuries at Holly Pond are very similar. Miller has three players out with hurt ankles.

Miller has two linemen who are unable to play due to ankle injuries. Running back Derrick Stancil is also unable to play in tonight’s game.

Holly Pond (1-1, 0-1 Class 3A, Region 6) suffered a loss to Susan Moore last week.
